Maria Agustina Carbon
I am an Argentine lawyer, passionate about AML, Risk & Compliance. Proud member of Women in Compliance. For more than 10 years I’ve been working in the financial market developing the best strategies to meet international standards and complying with regulation, in a region in which these issues are still nascent.
What makes you a Risky Woman?
Compliance related matters are a new notion in Argentina. By focusing my career on these matters, I’ve been trying to further the communication and education on them while dealing with an adverse local reality. The balancing of providing practical advice while complying with international standards is a tricky one indeed!
Name your top 3 achievements
- Providing Compliance support for the issuance of the first ever tradable securities of a major corporation.
- Implementing an effective AML system over a popular cash-only service.
- Being a consultant to the Postgraduate diploma related to AML / FT at Universidad de Buenos Aires, which allows me to be in constant contact with all major participants of the AML scene.
What is the biggest risk you’ve taken in your career?
Biggest risk I have taken in my career is to focus on these matters, currently lacking the local spotlight, which translates into a low consideration. While I sometimes wonder about the road not taken, my commitment is absolute, and I shall procure my best efforts to uphold these values.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
If Compliance does not work out, plan B would be to go back to my college summer job: checking in six-year olds into Sierra-at-Tahoe initial skiing school!
What is the best quality for successful leaders in Risk?
I strongly believe that in order to succeed leaders in Risk must have acute awareness of the business, create multi-disciplinary bonds within the organization and the industry and to have a proactive stance for keeping the corporate defenses and safeguards duly updated.
