London IWD2025: Road to NED Recap 1200 857 Risky Women

The Road to NED – it doesn’t have to be the road less traveled!

As we celebrate IWD, and in partnership with Risky Women network, I had the privilege of moderating an insightful conversation with 2 accomplished women – Rachel Tranter (WoB) and Victoria Mellor (Executive coach) – each with wealth of experience in non executive director roles – successfully connecting boards and candidates and supporting them through the application process and beyond. They are a true inspiration and their insights prompted us to think about the hidden talents that we can get in action, and all of the skills that could benefit boards, and most importantly – the (underestimated) power of our networks. The conversation was so engaging and packed with practical guidance and tips on how to become a NED – we could have gone for another day.

A wonderful event hosted by LSEG Risk Intelligence in special partnership with Risky Women!

Last night, I attended The Road to NED event, hosted by LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) in partnership with Risky Women. Despite the rather cold room, the discussion itself was engaging, offering valuable insights into what it really takes to step into a non-executive director (NED) role.

Speakers Rachel Tranter and Victoria Mellor shared their expertise on navigating board opportunities, offering practical advice on positioning, applications, and the hidden talent that boards need but often overlook.

My key takeaways were:

  • More people are board-ready than they realise: Many professional women have the experience and skills that boards are looking for, but they often underestimate their value or don’t know how to articulate it.
  • Networks matter a lot: One of the strongest messages was the importance of networks in securing NED opportunities. Leveraging and expanding professional connections can make all the difference.
  • The process is more accessible than it seems. From demystifying the application process to sharing real-world insights, the session highlighted that the path to a board role is within reach with the right strategy and preparation.

It was an informative and practical session, leaving me thinking about the next steps I (and many others) can take on the NED journey.
