Agree a perplexing question. The issue is there are so few women in senior leadership positions that if included with men, women would receive negligible awards (based on basic statistics of men and women in leadership positions).

This was tougher than I first thought! I’m an idealist, so I’d typically assume the ‘right’ answer is ‘no’. In an ideal and equal world it wouldn’t be necessary to have individual categories. Alas until equality arrives in full, women can potentially be overlooked due to bias (conscious or unconscious). So alas, this isn’t an ideal inclusive world and so there is imbalance to address. I do hope however, that it soon will not be necessary.

More awards = more winners. Everyone is happy 😃 we do it at the oscars, at music awards, etc – so why not for business leaders

This is a really interesting question. Like any good sales person I could make a strong argument either way. That said, I’d like to see female leaders awarded against peers irrespective of gender. Like some others have said perhaps the differentiation could be in the eligibility criteria for a company to have its leaders in consideration for an award. Hopefully that will drive a more widespread institutionalised focus on diversity, and equality of opportunity in leadership roles.

To me we fight so much to be seen as equals that having an award just for women make take some of that away. I could see maybe doing something like top male CEO and top female.

Tough question… I like recognition for women in business but don’t think blokes should get away with having a women’s award that means the women don’t get considered in open categories too. So can it be both! If not preference is to have some awards to ensure women get recognition and businesses who can’t qualify to enter look bad!

I think the field should be open but companies need to address the gender imbalance in their teams so naturally there is a balance in selection for awards. Tokenism doesn’t cut it these days in my view!

I’d like it to be open but there is still a way yet so we perhaps need the Women’s category.

Interesting topic. I think if there is a Women’s award, there should equally be a Men’s award? I’m not sure its equitable to have one over the other. I get the imbalance of women to men in business, but would be fairer to have both. Just my immediate thoughts on the idea.

Mine is a vote of optimism- I know the talent is out there, and when based on merit great women will win. Have I seen mediocre men win? Of course. But we’re THAT GOOD that we can win on an open field.
